The best time to visit Jaipur and Nahargarh Fort is during the cooler, dry months from October to March. The weather is pleasant for sightseeing. The monsoon season (July to September) offers lush green landscapes but can have heavy rainfall.

What to Wear

Wear lightweight and breathable clothing, such as cotton or linen, especially during the warmer months|Bring a light jacket or shawl for the evenings from November to February, as it can get breezy on the hilltop|Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are essential due to uneven surfaces and extensive walking|While not mandatory, dressing modestly (covering shoulders and knees) is respectful of the local culture.

Planning

Historical Context

Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort was primarily constructed as a place of retreat and a defensive stronghold. It was strategically positioned on the Aravalli hills, connected to the larger Jaigarh Fort through its fortifications. The fort was later expanded in 1868, with the addition of the magnificent Madhavendra Bhawan by Sawai Ram Singh II.

Photography Tips

  • Use a wide-angle lens for the sweeping landscapes from the top
  • The best light for photographing the city is during the golden hour before sunset
  • Capture the repeating patterns and symmetry inside the Madhavendra Bhawan corridors
  • A polarizing filter can help cut through the haze on clearer days and make the colors pop.

Insider Tips

  • Arrive about 90 minutes before sunset to explore the palace in daylight before securing your viewing spot
  • The road up to the fort is scenic; ask your driver to stop at a safe point for a photo of the fort from below
  • Carry some cash, as smaller vendors inside and outside the fort may not accept credit cards
  • Combine your visit with the Jaipur Wax Museum, located within the fort complex, for a different kind of experience.

Our Partners

  • We are proud to partner with world-class tour aggregators like GetYourGuide and Viator. When you book through our site, you are using their secure, trusted platforms to reserve your spot with a top-rated local operator in Jaipur.

Fun Facts

  • Nahargarh means 'abode of tigers', named so after the belief that the spirit of a prince, Nahar Singh Bhomia, haunted the construction, and a temple was built in his name to appease him.
  • The fort was featured in several famous Bollywood movies, including 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Shuddh Desi Romance'.
  • Madhavendra Bhawan, the palace for the queens, has 12 identical suites, and the corridors were designed so the Maharaja could visit any one of the queens' rooms without the others knowing.

The Sunset is No Joke!

Booked a sunset tour and it was worth every penny. The view as the sun goes down and the city lights come on is absolutely breathtaking. Our guide was fantastic, sharing stories you wouldn't get just walking around. Highly recommend!

Beautiful Fort, A Bit Crowded

The architecture inside Madhavendra Bhawan is stunning. So many beautiful photo opportunities. It does get very crowded at the main sunset points, so my advice is to find a quieter spot along the walls. Booking our ticket online saved us a long wait in the queue.

A Peaceful Morning Visit

We chose to go in the morning to avoid the sunset rush, and it was a great decision. It felt like we had the place to ourselves. The intricate details in the palace are incredible. A must-see in Jaipur for history and architecture lovers.

More Than Just a Fort

I was surprised by how much there was to see. The main palace is a maze of beautiful rooms, and we also visited the wax museum which was fun. The view is the main attraction, of course. We used a tour with a car which made getting up the steep hill very easy.

Go for the Views, Stay for the Vibe

The panoramic view of Jaipur is incredible. We grabbed a drink at the cafe on the terrace and just soaked it all in for an hour. It's a great place to unwind after a hectic day of sightseeing in the city. The fort itself is interesting, but the view is the real star.

Effortless and Stunning

Booking through this platform was seamless. We got our tickets instantly and just showed the QR code at the entrance. The fort itself is magnificent, much larger than I expected. The history is fascinating, and the views are simply unbeatable. A highlight of our Rajasthan trip.

A Photographer's Dream

Every corner of this fort is a photo opportunity. From the grand ramparts to the colorful doorways of the palace, I couldn't stop taking pictures. The sunset light is perfect. It can be a bit of a hike in some parts, so wear good shoes.
